Propane Tank Storage & Transport

Safety First — Store & Handle Your Cylinders the Right Way

Propane is a safe and efficient fuel when handled correctly—but improper storage or transport can create serious risks. Whether you use small BBQ cylinders or portable tanks for RVs, patio heaters, or generators, Mountain Top Propane wants to help you stay safe.

This guide covers the basics of how to store, transport, and handle propane tanks and cylinders responsibly.

Safe Storage Guidelines

Store Outside & Upright

  • Always store propane cylinders outdoors, in a well-ventilated area.
  • Keep them upright at all times to prevent leaks.
  • Never store tanks inside a home, garage, basement, or shed.

Avoid Heat & Sun Exposure

  • Store away from heat sources, open flames, or anything that may spark.
  • Avoid prolonged direct sunlight—especially in the summer.
  • Never store tanks near a furnace, grill, fire pit, or vehicle engine.

Keep Clear of Entryways

  • Don’t store tanks near doors, windows, or areas where gas could enter the home if a leak occurs.

Transporting Propane Tanks

For Small Cylinders (like 20 lb BBQ tanks):

  • Secure the tank upright in your vehicle—never lay it on its side.
  • Use a milk crate or stabilizer to keep it from tipping.
  • Keep windows partially open to allow ventilation.
  • Go straight to your destination—don’t leave tanks in a hot car.
  • Never smoke while transporting a propane tank.

For Larger Tanks or Refills:

  • Let us handle it! We’ll deliver your tank, install it safely, and ensure it meets all transport and site regulations.

Signs of a Potential Problem

Call us or your local fire authority immediately if you notice:

  • Hissing sounds from the valve or tank
  • The strong smell of rotten eggs (a propane additive)
  • Frost or ice buildup on the tank
  • A tank that has tipped over or been struck

Legal Storage Limits (WA State Guidance)

  • You may store up to two 20 lb cylinders at a residential location without special permits.
  • Larger tanks or multiple cylinders may require clearance and spacing guidelines—ask us if you’re unsure.
