Carbon (CO) Monoxide Safety

Invisible, Odorless, Dangerous — and Preventable

Carbon monoxide (CO) is a colorless, odorless gas that can be produced when propane or other fuels burn incompletely. While rare with properly functioning propane systems, CO buildup is dangerous and potentially deadly.

At Mountain Top Propane, we take carbon monoxide safety seriously—and so should you.

What Is Carbon Monoxide?

Carbon monoxide is created any time fuel is burned:

  • Propane
  • Natural gas
  • Wood
  • Charcoal
  • Gasoline or diesel

When propane appliances are properly installed and maintained, they produce very little or no CO. But poor ventilation, faulty equipment, or blockages in the exhaust system can cause CO to accumulate indoors.

Signs of CO Exposure

Early symptoms of CO poisoning often mimic the flu:

  • Headache
  • Dizziness or confusion
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Fatigue or weakness
  • Chest pain or shortness of breath
  • Loss of consciousness (in severe cases)

If you suspect CO exposure, leave the area immediately and call 911.

How to Prevent Carbon Monoxide Buildup

  • Install carbon monoxide detectors on every level of your home or building—especially near bedrooms and gas appliances.
  • Have propane appliances inspected yearly by a certified technician.
  • Ensure proper ventilation for all stoves, fireplaces, furnaces, and water heaters.
  • Never use outdoor appliances indoors, such as BBQ grills, camping heaters, or portable generators.
  • Don’t block appliance exhaust vents with snow, furniture, or storage.
  • Check chimney and vent pipes for cracks, corrosion, or blockages.

What We Do to Help

Mountain Top Propane technicians perform basic system checks during deliveries and can refer you to licensed professionals for:

  • Leak testing
  • Venting corrections
  • Appliance tune-ups
  • Regulator replacements

We also offer remote tank monitoring to help reduce the risk of running out of fuel—another common trigger for dangerous appliance behavior.
