Moving? Here's What You Need to Know About Propane
Moving Into a Home with Propane
Welcome! If your new home uses propane, we’re here to help you get started safely and smoothly.
- Check the tank: Look for a propane tank outside. Note the size, whether it's above or underground, and the tank's ownership sticker or tag.
- Who owns the tank? Many tanks are leased by a propane company. If you’re not sure, call us—we can help identify the owner.
- Start service: If the tank is leased by Mountain Top Propane, we’ll help you transfer or start service quickly. If not, we can still provide fuel, tank swap-out options, or guidance.
- Safety check: Before using propane appliances, a leak test and system check may be required. We’ll handle this for you.
Selling Your Home or Moving Out
If you’re an MTP customer or moving from a home with propane service, here’s what to do before you go:
- Let us know: Contact us as soon as you have a closing date. We’ll help you wrap up service or coordinate the transfer to the buyer.
- Transferring service: If the buyer wants to continue service with Mountain Top Propane, we can handle the paperwork and setup with them directly.
- Closing your account: If the buyer selects a different propane provider or no longer needs propane, we will arrange for a final meter reading and tank pickup (if leased).
- Owned vs. leased tanks:
- If you own the tank, it usually transfers with the property—but let us know if you’re taking it with you.
- If the tank is leased from MTP, we’ll need to schedule pickup or coordinate transfer with the new owner.
- If the tank is leased from a competitor, we may be able to offer a swap and better terms. Ask us before you leave.
Tip: Moving is the perfect time to review your propane needs, switch providers, or upgrade your tank. We’re happy to help!
