Peace of Mind Comes from Knowing What to Do
Propane is a clean, efficient, and reliable fuel—but like any fuel source, it must be handled with care. At Mountain Top Propane, your safety is our top priority.
Whether you're using propane to heat your home, power equipment, or run appliances, following a few simple safety guidelines will help you avoid accidents and keep your family or team protected.
General Propane Safety Tips
- Always store tanks outdoors in a well-ventilated area — never inside your home, garage, or shed.
- Keep tanks upright and secure during use or transport.
- Never use propane appliances designed for outdoor use indoors.
- Check connections for leaks using soapy water — bubbles mean gas is escaping.
- Don’t paint your tank dark colors; they absorb heat and increase pressure inside the tank.
- Know the smell of propane — an odor like rotten eggs is added for easy detection in case of a leak.
What To Do If You Smell Gas
- Immediately extinguish all flames or sparks.
- Leave the area. Don’t use lights, phones, or electronics.
- Shut off the main propane supply valve—if it is safe to do so.
- Call 911 or your local fire department from a safe location.
- Call Mountain Top Propane at 866-4-GAS-911 (866-442-7911) after contacting emergency services.
- Do not return to the area until a professional says it’s safe.
Before You Dig or Move a Tank
- Always call 811 before digging near buried lines or tanks.
- Only trained professionals should move, disconnect, or install propane tanks.
- We can help coordinate safe tank relocation or new construction planning.
Appliance Safety
- Have your propane appliances inspected annually.
- Make sure all appliances have proper ventilation and CO detectors nearby.
- Do not attempt to repair gas lines or regulators yourself—always call a professional.
Monitor & Maintain
- Mountain Top Propane offers free remote tank monitoring to prevent runouts.
- We visually inspect your tank and regulator during each delivery.
- Need help with maintenance or a safety check? Just ask—we’re here to help.
